The weatherman got it wrong again: predictions were 3 to 6ft swell at 14 seconds and the seas were flat with 3ft swell coming through every 10 minutes or so.
Timo, David and Weiwei joined me at 7AM this morning to head to the Mexican border and dive the Hogan. The seas were so flat we were there in ~30 minutes only (11 miles from Shelter Island to the Hogan). There was a pretty strong current from the north but we deployed lines and made sure everybody had a surface marker just in case. We all went down 125ft deep and found the anchor right next to the stern. Lots of very large lingcods (up to 3ft long) including one guarding a large pack of eggs and many fish around. We saw only one wolf eel (the other ones must all have been at the bow!). Viz was 40ft at the surface and about 25ft down.
From there, we went back north to Train Wheels and got distracted by several whales, including two that went straight under the boat maybe 10ft deep. There we found poorer viz ~ 10ft but a lot of life as usual: crabs, lobsters, blacksmith, opaleye, sheephead. A sea lion paid us a visit in the cave scaring all the schools of smaller fish that were hanging in the water column. A word of caution: there is a lot of fishing line there that could get dangerous and we will remove it next time we get there.
