A Night Dive at the Shores

Another great night dive at the shores. I copied Jackie’s report below. I am processing dive pictures of this dive and came across this close-up shot of a skeleton shrimp. There was ‘stuff’ on the shrimp. I didn’t pay much attention and thought it was some algae growth (like those seen on decorator crab). Today I took at close look and was surprised…I realize the ‘stuff’ was actually many little skeleton shrimp, with part of their bodies still stuffed in the ‘mom’. What a cool encounter!

Another highlight was a sea horse we came across when we just dropped down.

It was nice of seeing one as the water got colder and colder.

Another cool sighting was the cardinal fish in the big crevice. Most of the time the fish was shy and scattered. It’s hard to put them into one frame. Tonight they behaved differently. They bundled together and did not really shy away from my light. Here is a picture Jackie took.

The picture came out really nice.

La Jolla Shores
Time: night
Temp: 55 degrees with warm / cold pockets
Viz: variable 15’ + / clear to hazy patches
Surf: 1’ – 2’ not much power

Weiwei and I marched through very, very thick detritus for a nice tour of the canyon environs.
Needless to say the super moon illuminated the clear sky as we kicked out in fairly calm surface conditions, but with confused seas. Not unexpected. Interestingly, the up and down pulsing of the ocean that was felt at depth, could be felt at the surface. That felt weird.
We dropped into clear warm waters, which then turned colder and hazier, then it was all over the map.
Thick clumps of detritus line the base of the wall, and on some select areas, mini concentrations of down welling plummeted over the wall and cleared a path.
Sheephead are sleeping in their dens, Cardinalfish patrol the entrance, and the Blacksmiths are somewhere in between. Little Cusk Eels and some small Octos also out and about.
Highlight critter was the bright red / orange Seahorse swaying in the breeze. It was a nice size.
Back in the shallows, I headed a bit north to compensate for the slight southerly current. Lots of Swimming Crabs, more detritus swirling, and a few pot holes. A great dive.
