I decided to go for a night dive with the goal of getting some wide-angle shots of tuna crab invasion. When we kicked out, we were a bit off course and dropped on the sandy slope of the V point. I was sure where exactly we were but most likely on the south side of the V point. We were immediately surrounded by tuna crabs, a lot of them.

In fact, Jackie and I stayed at the same spot for the whole dive.
Every direction I turned, there were just endless crabs.

Many many of them. I enjoyed the crab red carpet and the crab shower.
Here is Jackie’s report for this dive.
La Jolla Shores
Time: night
Temp: 57
Viz: 4’ – 7’ sandy brown
Surf: 1’- 3’ with some power
Sandbars: yes – be careful when taking off fins, you may become a corkTuna Crab Invasion is here! Viz was horrible, unless you spent your entire dive in the same location surrounded by a gazillion Tuna Crabs. It was a veritable mosh pit. Weiwei was glad he decided to go wide angle! Their little pinchers pack quite a punch; they know just where a diver’s skin is exposed. A Sea Hare was curled up in a ball, and a Navanax was frozen in its tracks, perhaps both overwhelmed by the sea of red. Exit was fun, as the sand bars faked us out with taking off fins, and the northerly current making its presence felt. A great dive.
Check out Jackie’s video of the tuna crab invasion. Very cool.
