Night Dive at La Jolla Shores

The great conditions held strong today. I joined Callie for a night dive at La Jolla Shores. Although the air temperature was on the low side, the water temperature was kept at high 50s. The sea was calm and the night sky was beautiful.

We decided to head north the Vellocitos Point. Shortly after we dropped off, we spotted a few nudies on the grass. We didn’t spend too much time there and headed to the canyon directly. The visibility at the canyon was very good. Along the wall, there were many ship crabs. They looked very clumsy crawling on the wall. Here’s one of them.

I didn’t see many nudies even at the Vellocitos Point. So about half way through the dive, we turned toward the shore. To our surprise, the sand dollar field was teemed with all kinds of life. It was a surprise to see a few baby sea hares and they definitely belong to the cutest creatures you could think of. They were so tiny that I could see clearly their outlines. They were crawling along the grass, making turns and stretching their bodies. Because they were so small, I had a pretty difficult time to focus my camera. Here are a few shots of one baby sea hare on the grass.

I also took a video of the little guy.

Another exciting discovery is a Haminoea vesicula. This is my first sighting. When I saw it crawling on a grass, I didn’t know what it was and thought it might be a navanax. It was really cool!

Further toward the shore, we saw lots of California Armina and at one point, a pack of them. With so many sightings, this is a dive that can’t get better.
