Dusk Dive at La Jolla Shores

Tonight the dive at the canyon was one of the best. I headed out with Diver Jackie and came across two huge guitar fish in the crevice. I haven’t seen a guitar fish for a while and suddenly ran into two piled together, leaving the big sheephead crying (‘that is where I am supposed to sleep’).

Near the V point on the canyon ledge, I saw this decorator crab. It put tubes on its body for decoration.

Here are few more pictures.

And then at the turn of the canyon, we came across a huge salp-like critter (a siphonophore). Initially I thought it was dead kelp but once got closer, I realized what it was.

It had long tentacles paralyzing many macro critters swimming by and gave a stung on my forehead. Other encounters are not uncommon but fun. In and out the water was clear, calm and beautiful!

A great dive. Below I copied Jackie’s report.

Headed out with Weiwei in Lake LJ for a great dive with some interesting critter appearances.
Around the bend from VP, we spied something floating along. It was an 8’ blueish and yellowish Siphonophore, and as we took photos and vids, I heard a “girlie man” scream; I knew what happened…and I might have laughed….(Weiwei’s forehead recovered). Nothing like hearing a scream in total darkness with no bottom reference…
It was also cool to see 2 Guitarfish occupying the Card den, complete with irritated Sheephead.
Also out and about were a few Cardinalfish keeping the Lobster company, Heart Urchins, Ocean Whitefish, Cusk Eels, a few Barred Sand Bass and several Horn Sharks. A great dive.
