Mike and I headed out to Mission Point this morning, hoping to see lots of nudibranchs and fun creatures. We got there very early and the park was quite. As the high tide was two hours away, we suited up quickly and headed into the water.

Initially, the water looked quite murky. I landed right on top of a big butterfly ray and the ray jumped up – that was a scary moment. After we swam out a little bit more, the water became quite clear. Following the boulders we headed toward the channel.

Mission Point is really the navanax wonderland. Every few seconds you can see one. Some of them are really big in size. Navanax feeds on other nudibranchs, which makes them like a beast. We wonder if there were not this many navanax, other nudibranchs may flourish more.

I came across these San Diego dorids. They were pretty big in size. I spent quite some time with them.

Here are some other nudies we saw. Mike also found a Porter’s chromodorid. It was too deep under the rock and I could not get a good picture of it.

The highlight of the dive is really this black sea hare. After searching for tiny nudies, the sea hare looked like a monster. It is huge in size and crawls fast along the rocks. Taking pictures of the black sea hare is difficult. First, the total black color of the creature brings little definition to the picture and makes exposure tricky. Second, the black color also makes the particles in the water so apparent. Third, to position myself I have to climb up the boulders, which somehow makes the visibility very poor. We saw a sea hare in our first dive at the Mission Point and I couldn’t get a reasonable shot. Nevertheless, this time I got some shots.
