Cabo Pulmo Adventure Day 3

The one thing that inspired me to come to Cabo Pulmo is the jack tornado – a massive school of jack swirling into a big tornado shape. Seeing this iconic image of Cabo Pulmo is a dream to me and today the dream came true. What even better is the outstanding diving condition. The wind magically died down and the choppy sea turned into a turquoise lake. The search for the fish tornado started from the surface, where we could clearly see the bottom of the ocean. We decided to enter the water in an area with the reminiscence of the fish school.

We dropped down into about 45 ft water and experienced some current. I was not sure what would happen but just kicked with the group against the current. The reef fish was abundant. Soon we arrived a large open sandy area with a big dark shadow on the far. Slowly it came close and the fish tornado emerged in front of my eyes.

The school was massive: layers and layers of jack formed the main structure and adjacent layers swirled in the opposite directions.

A large school of giant grouper gathered at the bottom of the tornado, in the center surrounded by the jack. The whole school was turning, swirling, and moving. The energy is magnificent: I can feel the current sieving through the layers of the fish and hear the humming sound in the water emitted from the swirling tornado. What a treat from nature.

Another two dives of today were at the coral reefs of El Bajo De Los Meros. Once again, nature showed it’s wildness.

Some fish schools seem to drift slowly with the current. They emerge from the deep blue horizon. Whereas some fish schools, like the schools of surgeon fish, are moving fast to feed on the bottom. They come to me from no where. Just like they arrive with a short notice, they move and disappear quickly.

What a great day spent in the ocean!
