La Jolla Cove Morning Dive

The Cove – calm and clear spectacular conditions with dense kelp and lots of life.

I did a long-overdue cove diving this morning shortly after the dawn. As the big swell looming, I was expecting murky and surgy water without much hope for anything particularly interesting. My spirit was low until I got to the cove and saw the lake-like ocean under the beautiful morning glory. Kicking out the south of buoy was easy.

The diving also surprised me. As soon as I submerged, I was next to a huge school of barracuda. The fish was shy initially so I swam with an angle on their side. After a little while, they probably noticed that I wasn’t harmful.

For a solid twenty minutes, I was wrapped with the entire school of fish so enormous that they dimmed the sunlight.

After the fish headed to the south, I cruised to the northwest part of the rock pile, where the reef met the sand. It was such a joy to see the comeback of kelp. In many areas, they were quite dense. The water was so calm and I felt like swimming in an aquarium. The tall kelp, all the way up reaching the surface, was teemed with kelp bass. Schools of young blacksmith and senorita cruised in and out of the kelp forest. I kneed down at the edge of the sandy floor and spent much time with a curious sheephead.

There was one seal and one tope shark but they passed by fast. I enjoyed the spectacular condition and wished to have another tank strapped. What a bless to have such a wonderful ocean steps away with spectacular diving.
