La Jolla Cove It was mid-night last night when I opened Facebook and saw videos from Matthias. Feeling a sudden urge to see sharks, I dragged myself to put the camera together and went to sleep with excitement. Five hours later, I arrived at the cove and kicked out to the buoy when the sun rose.
When I dropped down to the bottom, the water was dark, murky, and extremely surgy – one of those days the cove felt like the hell. Even if I was surrounded by a dozen of sharks, I would not be able to see them. ‘Well, there will be another day…’
After about half an hour, I located the kelp patch on the west side of the buoy and started filming a large school of blacksmith. For some reason, the visibility suddenly opened up and the surge faded. I wedged myself between two boulders so I could relax and just watch. From that vantage point, a hell-like condition was replaced by clean and calm water. A beautiful scenery returned and I felt like sitting in front of a giant tank in an aquarium. My camera was rolling: a group of sea lions came, playing hide-and-seek with sea bass and a pair of cormorants swam in and out right in front of my domes. And suddenly a large shadow appeared on the upper corner my screen. A seven-gill finally came.

Time went fast when waiting for sharks: they could appear at anytime from anywhere…This shark cruised the area high above the bottom. A few times it got curious and came directly to me. I was just glad not to come back with an empty memory card.
One notable thing about heading back to the parking lot is the constant help I got from strangers lately at the cove. Every time people offered me a hand to climb up the stair. Today a few big waves picked up on my way back and I had to crawl back to the beach. A lady came to me and carried my weights and fins all the way back to my car. I am very thankful….
I spent all the time filming and didn’t take pictures. Here were just a few grabs from the videos.
