Point Loma – Reef and Wreck

Given the surf and wind conditions I guessed that we would get out of the bay and immediately turn back. There was wind and surf but all bearable.

At the Christmas Reef, the visibility opened up once I passed the murky layer in the first 20 ft. The anchor was right next to the iconic ‘sea horse’ rock. I was surprised to find a huge school of black smith hanging right around the rock.

It didn’t matter whether the vis was 5 or 50 ft as the fish blanketed the sky. Christmas Reef was one of my favorites and this turned out to be the best dive for me at this spot.

Then we headed to Yukon, which I haven’t dove for almost 5 years. The surface was actually calm and the wind felt warm. There was a crappy yellow layer at about 20 ft but then the visibility opened up with warm water and no current at all. I checked out the stern and the propeller thoroughly. While I was swimming toward the bow, there came another huge school of blacksmith. It was a fantastic dive.

Filming most of the time so only had a few pictures. I am glad the trip turned out fantastic.

Weiwei and Shane C joined me today for a couple dives off the lil red boat.
We all had doubts about conditions and were ready to head out of the channel and get turned back by choppy seas.
All willing to risk it , and it turned out to be a great day .
We headed to Christmas reef on 2-3 ft swells with an occasional 4-5 and no wind chop to speak of.
Shane had a new toy , an underwater metal detector, and we decided to use it looking at the structure we call Santa’s sleigh at Christmas reef to see if it was a metal wreck.
No pings…
Shane did, however find a weight pocket .
Describe it and he will get it back to you .
Vis was 10-15 and there was some surge, but Weiwei found a sweet spot with tons of fish and stayed there the whole dive.
As we pulled anchor, the line broke and I lost my red anchor with white stripe and chain
I’m heading back next Saturday to find it if nobody else does ..
For dive #2 we headed over to the Yukon and saw our hooky playing pink lady friend A.A. 😉
They reported good conditions and they sure were !
Vis was around 25-30 ft and very little surge as long as you stayed away from the top of the wreck and out of the holes.
Not good enough for penetration today , but tons of life .
We headed back on good seas
Great day with a couple Awesome buddy’s.
