Night Dive La Jolla Shores

Tonight the shores was a bit different. I kicked out far and dropped down right at the canyon edge. There was no thermocline – the canyon was a toasty 56 F but the visibility dropped to about 5 ft and super murky, but calm without much surge. I checked ~80 ft down the canyon to see whether there’s cold water but couldn’t find any and the visibility was equally low. As I cruised toward north and approached V point, the water felt colder but the improvement of the visibility was at very minimum.

All the critters I saw were common in the canyon. But there seemed to be an increase of tuna crabs. The layer got much denser. I suspect a new group just arrived because their orange color appeared new and fresh, contrasting with the dark brown of the old batch. Oh well…

Surprisingly, the poor visibility made the swimming back in the shallow a much improved experience. The water felt clear and warm at 63F. At about 15 ft water, I clipped my camera and immediately a big diamond ray appeared. Got my camera ready then it’s gone. Clipped my camera back and then an adult bat ray appeared. Again, got my camera ready then it’s gone. Clipped the camera back and then a tiny juvenile bat ray emerged from the darkness….none of them was recorded but glad they are back – a sign of season change in the water.

A fun dive!
