Scripps Canyon Diving

I joined Power Scuba today for a visit to the Scripps Canyon. It was a great group of divers and we made a fun trip.

When we arrived at the beach, the surf looked small and past the surf zone the water was flat. For the first dive, I geared up quickly and kicked out with a confidence of the canyon line-up. The water at the surface looked clear and beautiful. But a murky yellow layer appeared at about 30 ft before the water turned back clear around 80 ft but really dark. I was surrounded by the darkness without any structure or a bottom to look for. My line-up was a complete failure. I kicked toward north and then south but could not find any wall. Time was passing fast, and I decided to head east back to the beach. A few minutes later, a wall appeared. It had beautiful structure with yellow crabs and a ton of juvenile rockfish. It was dark but everywhere I saw it was spectacular. I couldn’t recognize the structure and didn’t know where I was. It was in about 90 ft water. By this time, my air was low, and I couldn’t stay long.

Back to the beach, I realized I was way too north and ended up a different section of the canyon. I also learned that many smaller branches and structures existed around that area as part of the canyon.

For the second dive, I corrected the line-up to the area where the buoy was used to be. By the I entered the water, the surf picked up and the surface turned choppy. This time I dropped right at the beginning of the canyon wall. I followed the routine and checked out a few notches along the wall. I went really slow, skipping most of the nudibranchs and hoping to see a swell shark, but had no luck. There was some juvenile rock fish but not as abundant as the previous site. There were some blacksmith and sheep heads and I didn’t see a single crab.

Although I ended up at a wrong spot in the first dive, the sightings turned out so much more spectacular compared to the second dive. I also learned how little of an area we as divers were actually exploring. It was a fun day outing and diving with a great group of friends.
