La Jolla Shores Night Dive

Kicked out to the canyon tonight with beautiful sunset. Headed to the north again to check out the old crap patch. I dropped down to 30 ft on the sandy slope. At the patch, the visibility dropped a lot compared to yesterday. There was a thick milky layer from 40 to 60 ft. But below it at about 65 ft, the visibility opened up a bit.

There were lots of pipefish on the sea grass. But the highlight of the divewas a huge angel shark. I never saw one this big with a big belly. While I was filming it, all of a sudden, it emerged from the shallow sand and took off, gliding right above me.

From there I headed south toward the V point. I saw more and more tube worms spawning and the visibility turned worse and worse. Most activity occurred under the wall on the north side of the point. The water turned into milk and at various spots the visibility dropped so much that I could barely see anything. While the spawning was happening all over the place, but it took me quite a while to film one tube that was ejecting the larvae. I didn’t see spawning from the tube worms on the top of the V point.

From the V point I headed back to the shallow. A large school of grunions followed me. There were a ton of swimming crabs at the sand dollar field. In the sandy slope, I also came across two large horn sharks.

It was a great dive.
