Morning Dive to the North Wall

Headed to the north wall again for a morning dive. The surf was supposed to pick up this morning but before I remained small. When I got to the shores, the sky was dark. It was drizzling and the wind started to pick up. But the ocean remained flat for the time. I geared up fast before the wind got stronger and walked into the water. There were lots of wind chops. During the kicking out, there was some strange currents and I had to constantly adjust the direction to make sure the line-up was correct.

Despite the choppy conditions, once I dropped down, the water was beautiful. The sandy flat was calm and clear with a visibility of 30 ft+ and a beautiful tint of blue. Just a few kicks I got to the wall. The tuna crabs moved away and the lots of sheepheads in the water column. At the beginning of the wall, the water was warm at 57 F and the thermocline was down below 80 F with 51 F. But as I kicked toward west, cold water gushed in and pushed the thermocline to about 55 ft. But the visibility remained stellar.

Lots of lobsters and crabs in the crevices with juvenile rockfish. Other critters were not uncommon. It was a beautiful dive. On my way back, the surge picked up a bit but getting out of the water was easy. I got open water certified on an Easter Sunday years ago so it’s great to get a nice dive in.
