Giant Feather Duster Worms

Giant feather duster worms (Eudistylia polymorpha) live in translucent tan tubes made of protein. Seeing one with the “feather duster” sticking out of the tube is common. But most times they are super shy and will retreat when approached. I came across one this morning down the canyon wall. When I approached, it retreated. It didn’t hide all the way to the bottom of the tube so I knew it would come out soon. So, I set up my camera and waited. Not before long, it slowly stuck out and opened its plumes. It did twice for me and was beautiful.

Getting up early this morning was a bit of struggle. I came to the shores shortly after the sunrise. Behind the knee-high waves, the shores was flat. The cloudy sky and the ocean merged at the horizon and the beach felt like a giant lake. The super shallow was clear. A young guitar fish darted away when I walked into the water. Kicking out was super smooth. Upon descending to the bottom, I noticed that the yellow layer hovering on the surface had disappeared. The water at the sandy flat was a bit murky with a visibility of 5-8 ft. Like yesterday, the thermocline stayed at the canyon top. Therefore, the visibility and the temperature varied from spot to spot. On average it was 15-20 ft and 52 F in the cold. There was a mild current going north. There were many critters at the canyon from diving cormorants to big pipe fish, from nudibranchs to young rockfish. Most crevices were occupied by yellow/brown rock crabs. It was a fantastic dive.
