New Year Eve Day at the Shores

There is no better place to celebrate the new year than La Jolla Shores. Mike and I decided to venture out to the North Wall. For a long period of time, the diving condition at the shores has remained perfect. We dropped off on the sandy bottom right next to the wall. The water was green and the wall was quiet.

Not a lot was going on along the canyon. The crevices were much occupied by lobsters. Along the way, we saw quite a few sheepheads in good sizes. Schools of blacksmith were also hanging around. The scenery was serene.

As we were approaching our deco time, we turned and swam toward the shore. To our surprise, the sandy bottom was full of life. The Price’s Aeolid is everywhere. I also came across a juvenile sea hare. But the highlight of the dive was the sighting of black dorid. This was the first time I saw this kind of nudibranch. The little was on a piece of kelp. The gills were on his back and the yellow stripes were prominent.

I spent the second dive on the south wall, and ventured out to nearly the end of the canyon. The South Wall was very quiet and everywhere I went was covered with thick mud. It didn’t look like the place I visited a few weeks ago. While I was taking pictures of a baby sea hare, two sea lions came right next to me without any notice, which scared the hell of me.

As the canyon was quiet, I turned to the sand dollar field. Again, I got to see lots of Price’s Aeolid. Accidentally bumped into a red octopus. I followed him for quite a while and he inked me three times! By pure luck, one of the incident was caught by my camera.
