Headed out with Steve to Point Loma today. The dive site Steve picked was ‘Main Channel’. Basically it was a big horse-shoe shape cliff. The unique structure at this site was magnificent – long deep channels with gigantic vertical walls. The visibility was not superior and it was pretty surgy near the channel. As a result, I didn’t get good pictures of the wall.
The majority part of my dive was spent with a really cool ling cod. I was attracted to it because of its large size and a shark-like appearance. The fish just laid eggs and it was trying to protect them. So we got really lucky to get close. At beginning, it was nervous and swam around us, trying to lead us away from the eggs. Soon it probably realized that we were doing no harm and it became quiet.

I dumped all the air and stayed at the bottom,. The fish posed for me.
I also took some videos. Here is the one showing the fish guarding the eggs.

What a great day spent on the ocean!
Here is the report from Steve – thank you Steve!
Weiwei and I dove the main channel today.
Swells were only 2-3 ft and having sun and a slight breeze made for a nice day above the water.
The vis was between 10 and 20 ft which was a nice surprise after the bigger swells off Point Loma all week.We found a lingcod that was brooding a clutch of eggs.
He kept trying to get us to follow him away from the nest and then would sit and pose.
It was the third year that I’ve seen him or another one there in the area watching over eggs .
Very cool.
Weiwei was taking pic’s of him and the eggs when I heard dolphins.
I turned back and three of them were checking Weiwei out !
They took off when I got to close , but they were sure interested in what the diver was doing .
He heard them , but never turned around to see them.
Makes you wonder how often things are going on behind us that we aren’t aware of.
Another great day on and under the H2O !
