Colors of Point Loma

I went out today with Steve. Instead of going to the area of Point Loma kelp bed, we ventured to the south cliff and dove two sites that were new to me: Three-hole crack and Anchors.

Both sites had huge walls, which were covered with colorful sea anemones. But I found the shallower ground above the wall was quite unique. Compared to the sites I visited before, the shallower region of these two sites had more rocks and a lot more kelp. The kelp here was shorter so the field looked as if covered by shrub instead of the iconic kelp forestry. The kelp was also much denser, covering the whole ground. The leaves were swinging with the surge, as if the entire ocean bottom was waving.

What struck me most was the colors of the reef – red, yellow, pink, and purple – all fresh and exuberant. I normally like to spend time exploring the inside of cracks and crevices, but this time I cruised around the rocks and enjoyed the varying colors.

Different from pictures taken in my previous dives at Point Loma, which were loaded with nudibranchs, this time most of the pictures are about the color. More and more I feel that color is one character of Point Loma – colors of anemones, corals, kelps, and everything else.

Here is the report from Steve:

Weiwei G and Jim R joined me today for a couple dives off the south Point Loma cliffs.

We were going to dive Train wheels, but some-one was fishing it, so we headed to 3 hole crack.

There are 3 hole type structures in the crevasse , thus the name..

Vis on both dives was decent, between 20 and 30 ft. and the surge was mostly above the walls on the shallower parts of the dive.

This site has incredible walls that go around 30 ft top to bottom and covered in corals.

The walls are beautiful.

Most of the fish life was deeper on the wall at 85-90 ft and vermillion rockfish were the predominate species there.

As we headed south, we enjoyed the mushroom rock gardens, which is a cool feature that I haven’t seen anywhere else on the cliffs.

For dive # 2 we headed over a little north to Anchors.

I got to the bottom and my safety sausage came undone.

As I sat on the bottom rolling it up, I looked up to see a huge torpedo ray about 10 ft away and heading straight at me in slow motion!

I side stepped (not wanting a shock) and got Jim’s attention.

We took some pic’s and then I followed him around for five minutes just shooting away.

I may have gotten a decent shot, and will post it tomorrow..

It was a great day on and under the H2O
