Point Loma Reef Diving

A typical Point Loma dive trip include three parts: nudibranchs of all kinds, reefs with striking colors, and a surprising encounter. Today we headed to a new site that Steve recently located. The sea was super flat on our way out. Consistent with recent dive conditions, from the surface to about 50 ft the water was milky and dark. The pitch black descend reminded me those dives back to the east coast. But once I hit the bottom, the visibility opened up to a decent level.

Nudibranchs: all over the place but nothing uncommon. I was searching for a Hopkin’s Rose but didn’t find one. The variety of the nudibranchs at this site was not as abundant as the others, and most of them were fairly shy, retreating their gills when immediately seeing my light.

The reefs: beautiful, beautiful! I was mesmerized by the striking colors.

I wish the visibility would be a bit better so the kelp and the green water could make nice background. In addition to the sea anemones, the gorgonian also showed exuberant colors.

The bloody red color of from a kind of soft coral was very cool.

Wide-angle was not my camera’s specialty but some of the pictures turned out very nice.

Surprise encounter: a wolf eel! It was at the end of my second dive. I was going to turn off my camera and start ascending. But a big cute wolf eel showed up in the crevice. He was very curious but at the same time very shy. We looked at each other for a while.

The opening of the crevice was tiny so I couldn’t get closer.

What a great trip to the reefs!

Here is the report from Steve:

Weiwei and Jim R joined me today for a couple dives on the new site we found last weekend.

Marla M named it “Double reef ” because there are two reefs, one east and one to the west.

The ride out was calm with not much swell or chop.

The ride home was bumpy with windchop creating whitecaps

Water temp was 56º on the surface, and 46º to 48º depending on who’s computer you looked at.

It was COLD !!

The vis on dive #1 was 2-10 ft , with deeper being best.

The vis at depth improved to 15-20ft at depth on dive # 2 .

I got a chance to explore this spot, and found the deeper reef that Marla M and Janet P found last weekend.

All in all , a decent enough day.
