A Moring Dive at the Marine Room

So here I just directly copied Mike’s report. Despite the poor condition, this has been my best dive at the Marine Room.

Many times as a diver in Southern California you might hear the phrase “beat the storm”.  As a storm is coming, divers with the itch to get in the water try to get in one last plunge before the sea gets nasty.  Thus far it’s been a fairly successful plan.  Weiwei and I gave it a go this morning.  We started very hopeful.  The sea was flat, the sky was bright, and we had visions of the La Jolla coastal caves dancing in our minds.  But even as we were gearing up, we could hear some crashing waves, letting us know things weren’t so flat anymore.  A few yards past the newly breaking swell Weiwei remarked “its not so bad”.  But the long kick from the Marine room towards La Jolla was not the pleasant experience we hoped for, as the swell grew.  We dropped down looking for the reef we could follow toward the caves.  Sand, sand and more sand, with the occasional rocky boulder thrown in.  The visibility was poor, mostly 5′, occasionally 10′ … maybe.  We surfaced further along to check our bearings, and saw waves pounding into the caves.  So that was at least a small comfort.  We didn’t get all the way there and then find out we couldn’t dive them.  Instead, we headed away from shore, deeper and found some nice reef.  Other than the poor visibility, it was a nice place to dive.  We surfaced to larger swell, and a very dark grey sky.  While we didn’t exactly beat the storm today, it worked out ok.  A long surface kick and we were back on land.  Then up to the cars to break down our gear, and say goodbye until next time.
