In the past a few days, big swells dwelled at the shores. As the result, I got a few days of break from the water. Finally the sea calmed down today. I decided to pay a visit to the canyon wall.
I kicked out with Michael and Charlie. The surface was choppy so I dropped shallow. The visibility at the sandy bottom was pretty bad, and it didn’t improve much at the top of the canyon wall, where the thermocline was obvious. So I dove down below 80 ft, and the visibility opened up.
As usual, the canyon at night is full of drama. It’s an unlucky day for this poacher, which was caught alive by a sarcastic fringehead. The poacher was still alive and the fringehead wasn’t even serious of eating the poor fish.

From the perspective of the fish, the drama was really about live and death.
I swam north toward the Vallecitos Point. Near the point, I spotted the clad flat worm. This was the same location where I saw a lot of them last year. Despite their appearance at the same location, they had changed color from white to dark brown.

I spent quite sometime shooting videos this time. Here is a short clip of what I saw in this dive.

Wens. La Jolla Shores Night Dive
Time: +/- 7 pm
Dive Length: 45 mins
Surf conditions: a bit dicey: not high surf, but multiple layers of surf to get through, with the occasional 5 footer rolling through….so, doable, but with effort. Having trouble believing recent Swell Watch forecasts. Saturday, it said surf would be nearly 7 ft today in La Jolla, then when I checked it yesterday, it was solid blue, indicating less than 3 ft, so it was wrong in *both* instances. *Over*estimating it in the first instance and *under*estimating it in the second. Maybe NOAA is better at it.
Viz: surprisingly, once we got below 60 ft., viz wasn’t bad……well beyond the range of our lights, especially in the shallows….
Max Depth: 90 ft
Critters: not a whole lot out tonight, but a baby octo, who was cute and a couple juvie Sarcastic Fringeheads and a green Pipefish towards the end.
Buddy: Charles Lofton [Mr. Re-breather], ran into WeiWei on V-St and he kicked out with us, but the went on to do his own thing.
More pictures from the dive.
