Point Loma – Main Channel

Headed out to Point Loma with Steve today. It was just two of us so we kind of spreading things out without too much concern of the space. The site Steve picked was Main Channel and the reason was that he needed to retrieve things falling off the boat last time. The condition was superb – good visibility and basically no current.

Once we dropped down, Steve pointed me a white dendronotid. This kind of nudibranchs is common at Point Loma but I never saw one before. Their big sizes and bright white color make them so obvious. I was hooked, and spent the whole dive on the same pinnacle. The one Steve showed me was on a kelp frond. Naturally the pictures showed a beautiful black background.

Then next to the kelp, I spotted a few more.

Although I didn’t swim far and stayed on the same pinnacle, that didn’t mean I only saw white dendronotid. In fact, while I was focused on white dendronotid, I spotted more nudibranch in the close proximity. The more I paid attention, the more I saw, such as this little nudibranch:

Initially I thought it was a Trapania velox, but while I was processing all the pictures, I realized it was a three colored polycera.

Talking about nudibranchs, Hermissenda had to be mentioned. They were beautiful and they were everywhere.

Here are other cool stuff I saw.

Finally, I made a shore video of the white dendronotid.

Here is Steve’s report:

Weiwei and I headed out to the main channel site on the ancient sea cliffs off Point Loma.
Vis was great , with at least 30 ft and better deeper.
The water temp below 75 ft got real cold (my watch said 49º )
The anchor line stayed slack with no current or wind, and the 1-2 ft swells were nice too.
Dive animals came up and dropped anchor to the south and checked out that side of the finger.
The reason for this dive was a search and recovery of a pair of Ray-Bans lost over the side last weekend and I am glad to say they are sitting above water waiting on their owner to pick them up.
Dive #1 I headed to the north of the site and explored the Y-crevasse , which is about 25′ deep in places and 6″ to 5′ across.
Very cool
Dive # 2 was the search and recover dive in the channel and then off around the south finger.
I love this area with great vis .
Hope conditions hold out for tomorrow !
Now to unpack and set-up my camera and housing that just arrived from repair today ..
and I love my new silicone zip seals on the wrist (neck to come later)
