It’s a beautiful Sunday. I went with Mike to dive Scripps Pier. The pillars of the pier are in shallow waters and the surf can be a problem. Fortunately today the sea was calm and the ocean looks like a lake. The very mild surf did not create any trouble to us. Riding the gentle wave, we easily got to the end of the pier.
Once I got down to the bottom, I swam to one of the pillar and immediately saw a few orange-spotted nudibranches. I was excited to take pictures of the little nudies. After a few shots, I looked around and then realized the pillar was filled with little creatures. On the outside, you see the pillar was wrapped with giant star fish, sea anemones, mussels and many others. But if I slow down and take a close look at the behind, I could see many others – nudies, rock fish and even octopus. It was interesting that each pillar seemed to have its own ecosystem as I saw different things on different pillars. Another highlight of the dive was the baitball – every few minutes I could see one in a big size often seen in a boat dive at deeper seas. It was a fantastic dive.
p.s. The Scripps Pier is shallow, 15-25 ft deep so we stayed a pretty good amount of time for the first dive. In the second, I was cold and the camera ran out of battery. As the result, we didn’t stay to the end of the dive and left with a half-full tank.
