Bat Ray Feeding Frenzy at the Shores

Filming the bat ray congregation and forage is on my bucket list. As the sightings of bat ray at the shores are increasing, I think it’s time to head out and look for them.

This morning, I headed out to the south wall. Compared to the northern part of the canyon, the south wall is much quieter. For quite a while, I didn’t spot anything interesting. Past the main wall, I got to the grassy area near the pipe. Under the grass, there were quite a lot of Armina californica. This is a common species of nudibranchs at the shores. I found them under the canyon in the grassy area. Compared to those on the sandy flat, they are much bigger in size.

A big school of perch also gathered in the area. While I was taking pictures of the armina, I noticed the water right in front of me turned murky. I looked carefully and here they were: a few bat rays came and started feed under the canyon. For the first time, I got the opportunity to look at them this close. They were enormous, foraging under the canyon wall with a huge power. When I got too close, they stopped the feeding, raised the head, looked at me for a few seconds, and took off. But not long they swam back. I was circling around together with them, observing and filming.

The school of perch blended with the bat rays and in a few minutes a big school of sardine came by. Suddenly an epic show was put up at the canyon. What a privilege to get close to these animals in the middle of their feeding frenzy. Here is the finished video showing the magnificent event.
