Today I was fortunate to join Pete S, Jonathan W, and Greg to dive P-38 on board Pete’s boat. We started from Dana Landing in the early morning and headed north. The sky was overcast and the water was as flat as a mirror.

P-38, the only structure in a vast sandy bottom, together with its 130+ ft depth, is not always easy to locate, making it an elusive wreck to dive. I wasn’t sure whether I could actually see it. Unlike other wrecks in our water, P-38 sunk in a real-life accident. We must be following the route of its last journey over 70 years ago, passing the Cove, the Shores, Blacks Beach, and finally arriving at the water east of Torrey Pines. Pete dropped the anchor with full confidence. Surprisingly, the sea became even flatter and the sun broke the cloud. The water was clear and blue.

Jonathan and I dropped down first. At about 90 ft, we could see the anchor on the sand and continued to about 110 ft. With a few kicks we saw a black shadow in front of us. Here it was. About 20 feet next to the anchor, the airplane lay quietly on the sand. The wings, the cockpit, and the canopy, together became a small piece of history preserved in the deep ocean. I circled around the airplane, enjoying the precious time of staying close to it. Jonathan was able to find three wolf eels and signaled me to take pictures of each. At that depth, time went by fast. Soon it was time to leave.

We rode back and spent the second dive at Quast Rock. To avoid the kelp, Pete anchored the boat at the edge of the reef. A fish gala was happening right at the big kelp next to the anchor.

Schools of black smith, jack mack, and barracuda took turns to show up and circle around the kelp. A harbor seal, especially playful, stayed with us for the whole dive. At times, it came close, stayed behind me, and allowed me to pat its back.
