I met Diver Jackie at the shores and we decided to buddy up to explore the canyon. Shortly after we dropped off, Jackie spotted a large angel shark buried under the sand right on top of the canyon wall. I was super excited since I hadn’t seen one for a long time. We took turns to film it. However, the krill was so thick that I could barely see the shark.
Then a horn shark swan by and we were distracted. We turned our cameras and followed it toward the canyon. Surprisingly, the horn shark brought us to a baby giant sea bass, a size bigger than those I often see. So we ditched the horn shark and turned to the sea bass. It’s an amazing creature. Sometimes it swam on the sandy flat, turning back and forth, like most of the baby giant sea bass. But sometimes it swam up to the middle of the water column, facing against the current and hanging still, just like an adult giant sea bass. Such behavior is just like its size – in between a baby and an adult.
We followed it for a long time until we totally messed up with our navigation. After we oriented ourselves again, we swam toward the V point. Numerous encounters along the way – big kelp crab, dancing kelp fish, a gigantic sea hare, bat rays, and tons of horn sharks – never ending. I don’t remember seeing so many things in one dive, being so busy that I can’t recall what was the condition like, and laughing so hard underwater that we kept tumbling down the canyon.
Here is the video Jackie made from this dive.

Wow. What an awesome action packed night dive. Headed out for the canyon environs with Weiwei G. and almost immediately the critter action started. A nice Banded Guitarfish swam by, some Sarc. Fringeheads were out in the sand, and the water was getting thick with krill.
Arriving at the canyon edge, I spied the telltale green iridescent glow of an Angel Shark, and it was a nice big one. It allowed us to spend quite some time with it. At some point though, the krill got so thick we could no longer see the shark. A krill-white-out! As we left the Angel Shark and headed over the edge, a big Horn Shark swam by, right next to a baby GSB who was moseying along in the water column. Never mind all the other critters that were out as well. This GSB, about 7” long, had started developing the darker brown shading, but was still accentuated with the white and black dots, and those huge fins. Like Weiwei said, it started displaying the behavior of the adults. Very cool. We spent quite a bit of time following it and didn’t really know where we ended up for some time. North of VP. It lead us to another (or may be the same) Horn Shark, which lead us to what looks like a Sheepcrab scaling the kelp sporting a nice algae chapeau, then a Lobster, a nice Kelpfish was out, tons of juvie Rockfish, Cusk Eels and all the other usual suspects. A few jack Macks darted about as well. Thanks to Weiwei for providing the excellent lighting by which to film. This dive was beyond great.
