I joined Remi, Chris, and Timo for a trip to USS Hogan. I have wanted to dive Hogan for a long time and finally my dream came true.

We started from Shelter Island and rode out on an extremely flat ocean. The sky was overcast and a bit of fog was up the hills of Point Loma. After a few minutes, the skyline of San Diego faded and we were surrounded by a vast emptiness of ocean. A flock of birds followed us. They flew very low, barely above the water. For a moment, they were on the horizon, but the next, they disappeared behind the swell.

The condition at Hogan was amazing – basically no surgy, no current. Remi found the wreck easily. We quickly suited up and dropped off. As an old wreck, Hogan has broken down into scattered pieces, a nice feature to attract lots of marine life. One the top of the wreck grew a dense pack of red gorgonian. Among the branches were lingcods of substantial sizes.

Of course talking about Hogan one has to mention about wolf eels. Although I was not super kin to wolf eels (as I had been enjoying hanging out with the one at the shores), the sizes of those wolf eels were just astounding, and I have to mention that they were EVERYWHERE.

For the second dive we headed out to New Hope Rock. Despite my many visits to Point Loma, this was my first time to dive this site. It was shallow.  The interesting part of the rock its periphery, which curved inside toward the bottom, creating many holes and crevices for creatures. I enjoyed watching a few baby sheephead swimming in the kelp.

Under the crevices, the number of lobsters was amazing – just another example of nature’s great gathering.
