It was getting late and I wasn’t sure if I should dive tonight. But the urge to visit the canyon conquered my laziness. I rushed to the shores, trying to catch the last bit of day light to line up for the secret garden. But the darkness kicked in fast. Halfway out, I could barely see the edge of the building on the shore. The water didn’t cooperate either – the surface was choppy and the mixed current pushing me back and forth. To compensate such uncertainty, I swam toward the north, hoping that in the worse case I could still find the secrete garden by following the edge of the canyon.
I dropped down at the sandy slope filled with sand dollars. Following the draw I got to the ledge at about 90 ft and started heading south. I have been following the same route for so many times and now I could easily recognize the lobster dens and a tiny ledge before the secret garden. These landmarks ensured me that I was following the right course.
Shortly, a white clump appeared afar and I immediately recognized it – the squid eggs on a large red gogornian. This clump of eggs has been there for a while now but it hadn’t changed that much. Its white color contrasted with the pitch black background, marking the edge of the secret garden like a shinning light house. I swam in to take a closer look but could barely see any changes on those eggs. I am not sure when they would get hatched.
The patches at the garden looked the same – sea fans, red gogornians, tubes, and large anemones. But other than that, the area was quiet. When I reached the southern end of the garden, I started ascending, with a slight angle toward the south. The patch retreated and a vast area of sand emerged.

Interestingly, there was an increasing number of sand crabs and target shrimp. Although I saw them frequently in my dives, tonight there numbers caught my attention. They were everywhere. Each shrimp or crab didn’t stay at the same place. Instead, they were constantly hoping to another playmate and the playmate did the same, making the area like a chess game.
Soon the crap patch appeared, and then the canyon wall. Similarly, the whole area was filled with sand crabs and the shrimps. I was taking pictures here and there. Overall, nothing was really uncommon. On interesting encounter though was a Dirona picta. I thought the season of this kind of nudibranchs has long gone but apparently some of them were just hiding themselves.
It was just another low key night played out at the canyon.
