Night Dive – A Last Minute Plan

Another heat wave hit San Diego today (really not that bad using an East Coast standard). I was exhausted from spending the whole afternoon sailing at Mission Bay. But in the quick trip to the dive shop, everyone I met was telling me how stellar the dive conditions were at the shores. Well, I just had to go.

I took the routine route – starting from the north and heading to the south. The condition was holding strong, no surge, good visibility. At the sandy flat, a round stingray and a thorn back ray were hanging out close to each other. I am glad to put them into one picture.

The current pushed me a bit to the south so I got to the V point very fast. On the kelp there were a lot of decorating crabs. It was fun to cruise around the giant kelp.

A few more shots.

Behind the kelp frond was hidden a big kelp fish.

It wasn’t a super shy one so I could get a few shots.

On the canyon wall, there were quite a few interesting critters. For example, this scorpion fish had beautiful colors on its body.

And an octopus was flashing its outfit as well.

At the point, the visibility was stunning. On the slope to the deep canyon, there were quite a few horn sharks, both adults and the babies.

From the point, I headed to the south, hoping to check out the pipe. While I was swimming along the main wall, under the second ledge (the deeper one), I spotted this huge cabazon fish.

It was hanging on the bottom of the ledge, almost upside down. After I took a few pictures, the fish swam to the top of the ledge.

It was a gorgeous fish!

At the pipe, I didn’t see many nudibranchs. But on the top of the algae, I spotted a black dorid. It was tiny.

A black dorid is alway a good find.

Here are the other pictures of this dive!
