Mission Point Beach

Mike and I ventured out today to Mission Point Beach. Neither of us dived here before, and thanks for Mike’s research, we knew this was a place full of potential. In fact, this was also the place Calli found the rare nudibranch during a snorkeling trip.

The entry site was a small sandy beach. Because it was inside the harbor, it was basically a lake without any waves. Near the shore, we saw a lot of eel grass. Although Mike suspected the grass would host an abundant of sea horses, we did not spot any. I did see a pipe fish hanging around the grass but that was the closest I saw. Our first dive was clam and the visibility was not bad. Once we got near the boulders close to the shore, we were immediately greeted by a large crab with bright orange color. This got me excited. While we were swimming along the boulder, we realized this place was the wonderland of navanax. We saw from tiny baby one to a gigantic one close to the size of sea cucumber. And they were everywhere. We also spotted many other nudibranchs but not anything we hadn’t seen before. The highlight of the dive was the black sea hare near the end of the dive on our way back. I was first shocked by its size – holly molly – it was big. And it was completely black. By no means it looked ugly – on the contrary the black color made it really elegant (as a black swan). Unfortunately, the mud was stirred up at that location and I could not get a good shot of the beautiful animal.

After the numerous exciting encounters of the first dive, we decided to make another one. We followed the same route to get into the water. To my surprise, the condition was changed dramatically. The visibility was extremely bad (which reminding me most of the dives back in New England). In addition, the current picked up – I believe this is because we were in the channel and the retreating tide caused a strong pulling current. As there was no way we could swim back, we decided to follow the current to enter the channel. In face, once we passed the turn, the current became mild and the visibility improved. As the channel was busy with boat traffic, you would think the bottom was dull. On the contrary, there were quite a few spots with very decent kelp and reefs. Under the kelp, we saw large schools of reef fish. It was beautiful. In addition to a few octopus, we also saw a moray eel of a pretty good size. The rock fish yawned in front of the camera, which was also interesting – not to mention many other creatures we saw.

In the end, we had to climb the boulders to get back to the shore. So timing wisely, this is a nice site to dive.
