A Night Dive to the Vallecitos Point

After seeing the picture of a red-tipped dorid from Jovan, I decided to head out for a night dive, hoping to see the same dorid. The water was still calm. It was sunset when I got to the shores and the view was breath-taking.

The condition was just like yesterday at Point Loma. In the shallow, the water was warm but the visibility was horrible, a word I rarely used. But once I passed the thermocline at about 35 ft, the water became crystal clear. But it was also cold – just about 50F. This made me feel as if I passed two different worlds. I started from the crap patch with crispy and clear water. It seemed that the growth of algae decreased quite a lot. On a piece of grass, I noticed this skeleton shrimp.

Although the visibility was very good, the water was a bit surgy. I spent quite sometime there taking pictures of this tiny shrimp.

Also at the crap patch, I came across a three lined Aeolid (Flabellina trilineata). I hadn’t seen one for a little while. I guess the temperature change triggers the bloom of certain species and alternates the creatures that are actively out.

From there I got to the canyon. Immediately I saw this lizardfish with a perfect posture for pictures.

I took quite a few pictures before it fled.

Near the Vallecitos Point, I noticed a lot of fiber structures on one big kelp. Taking a closer look, I saw a large number of tiny Dendronotus frondosus. Obviously this was an explosion of this kind of nudibranch.

This was cool sighting.

At the point, the water became even colder. I looked around and noticed again a large number of Dendronotus frondosus. Found this one on the tip of a tube.

On the southern edge of the point, I found another one.

However there was no sign of the red-tipped dorid that I was looking for. Well, till next dive.
