La Jolla Shores Morning Dives

It is always fun and relaxing to dive with Callie. We made two dives today at the shores. The sun was out early and the condition was nice. The shores has been quiet recently. Compared to the summer, not a lot was going on recently, especially during the day dives. An interesting scene happened in the middle of our first dive. From far away, we saw a silver bright object and I was immediately sure that it was a dead fish. We swam close and wanted to take a close look. To our surprise, there was an octopus, sitting next to the fish and holding tightly the body. While we were watching, the little octopus got nervous, obviously worrying that we might take its big meal. What happened next was quite amazing – the octopus tried to engulf the fish much larger in size and it worked hard, hoping to drag it to a safe place.

I was lucky to get a footage of the octopus engulfing and dragging the dead fish. We spent quite sometime watching it and were quite sure the octpus wouldn’t be successful, so we left.

Not far from the octopus, I found a pipe fish that was very cooperative with my camera. So here is a short sequence of the pipe fish probably catching algae for food.

Here and there we eventually saw quite some creatures. Even though nothing was really uncommon, the diving was really fun.
