La Jolla Cove Morning Dive

As the prime conditions returned and a tight schedule in the days ahead, I decided to take ‘dive first work later approach’ and sneaked out to the cove when it’s still dark outside. I took the stairs closer to the street, put my fins on at the last step, and walked back into the water. This made entry so easy that I felt as if I was on a cruise ship.

Getting to Buoy A was effortless – maybe the I was on the right tide. It was a surprise to see that almost all the kelp was gone. The whole area was flat with a lot of exposed sand flat. The visibility was about 20 to 30 ft but hazy with barely any surge to be felt.

A few minutes into the dive, I noticed two GSBs circling around me – one was bigger and the other was much smaller. They were far and I didn’t think they would ever come close. But I was wrong. A few minutes later when I turned back, the bigger GSB was right behind me. This sudden face-to-face encounter scared me and it took me a few seconds to realize what was going on and another few seconds passed before I raised my camera. That made the dive.

After the GSB went away, I kicked further west toward Buoy B. The reef used to be covered with lots of kelp now widely exposed and the sand channel looked just like the sandy flat at the shores. Without the kelp, my view was completely unblocked toward the open sea and interestingly this made me wonder what kind of creatures could emerge – a thrill that kept the diving so compelling.

On top of the reef among the sand bass, I spotted a pair of trigger fish. They were shy and kept on swimming, unwilling to let me get closer. But they seemed to get along with other fish and looked very happy with their new homeland.

Large schools of fish kept on appearing while I was cruising around the reef. Maybe, with less kelp around, they were eager to find some barrier object. They didn’t shy away from my approach and a large school of jackmackerel right under the buoy allowed me to get really close. From there I started kicking back toward the beach. The water was clear with a lot of fish.

It is one of those dives that made me feel that I was on a luxury dive trip in some remote locations. Hope you can go out and enjoy the beautiful water that we have.
