A Trip of All Oilrig Dives

I joined Power Scuba for a trip to dive the oilrigs off Long Beach. This was my the third time diving off the rigs. The trip started on Friday afternoon. It was a pretty stressful day. I planned to submit a grant that I had been working on on Friday. The plan was to get it submitted and then enjoy the long weekend. However, things did not go smoothly as planned. I had to wait until the coming Tuesday to give it another try. (Things turned out to be all right but my trip had been filled with a sense of stress). I drove up to Long Beach on Friday night. It was good to be on the Pac Star again. Everything was routine.

I woke up around 5:30. The deck was busy. The weather was good and the sea was calm. Soon the boat started and we had to the oilrigs.

The boat ride was about 90 minutes. The plan was to dive the single rig (Allen?) and then the twin rig. Oilrigs are fun to dive. I had been thinking how to position the camera for a great shot. I don’t know what was the best single shot to represent the whole concept of the rig. For the total three dives, I had a lot of exciting pictures. The first set was a few I took in the first dive. The structure was a small pylon attached to the big ones. My lens could just cover the whole structure.

The rigs are indeed very pretty. The pylons was packed with all kinds of life, bursting with stunning colors. Once in a while, I had to pause to just enjoy the pure beauty. I put the close ups in the second set to show the dense life packed on the rigs.

But my dream shots for the oilrigs are those with the large school of bait fish. Today’s condition was good and we had a large school. But the fish was mostly outside of the rig structure. Once in a while, the whole school would swim into the structure but capturing the moment was difficult. I had a few moments of encountering them. Here are the set.

The rigs make good subjects for shooting close-up wide-angle. I wish I put more structure on the background. Well it’s a learning process and will try out the next time. Here I gathered pictures that had plyons on the background into a group.

What a magnificent experience of diving these rigs. (I had elbow pain after the second dive and it got worse after the third dive. I was pretty certain that I got bent. The pain got much worse at night and I had to go to ER. Eventually I was transferred to Hillcrest and stayed in the chamber for the night. This experience is a lesson learned and I will write about it another time.)
