A Night Dive at the Canyon

Realizing I haven’t been to the main canyon for a long time, I decided tonight to give it a visit. The plan was to start from the main wall and cruise north to the Vallecitos Point. The surf was small but due to the strong wind, the surface was so choppy that I decided to drop off early. The visibility was good at the show, and swimming to the canyon wall was effortless.

Not surprisingly, the wall was teemed with all kinds of cool creatures. In a large crevice, I spotted a big octopus. Surprisingly, she was guarding her eggs. Octopuses, while guarding eggs, like to hide themselves. So this is a pretty rare sighting. Although taking pictures through the deep crack was challenging, I was quite excite to see such an event.

The sarcastic fringehead was also quite interesting, probably because I haven’t seen them for quite a while.

Near the Vallecitos Point, I veered deep and found a tiny den on the muddy flat. On top of the den, I spotted a Stearn’s Aeolid. Early this year, I liked to come to the Vallecitos Point because a family of Stearn’s Aeolid. But I haven’t seen them for a while. So seeing another Stearn’s Aeolid this time felt like seeing an old friend.
