A Night Dive at the Shores

Went out with Jackie again today, hoping the condition at the shores improve. But it actually stayed pretty much the same: murky, cold, and the whole canyon was dominated still by a large number of tuna crabs. Critters that were out were all surrounded by an army of crabs.

The crowd of tuna crab remained exceptionally strong. The canyon wall, the sandy slope, and the bottom slop were all covered.

Here I just copied Jackie’s report for this dive.

La Jolla Shores
Time: night
Temp: 54
Viz: improving to 15’ variable

Marched into Neptune’s domain with Weiwei through some sand bars and mixed currents, 2’ surf, but otherwise calm kick out.
Did the usual tour. Tuna Crab infestation invasion is still in full swing, and so are their little pinchers when they grab your lip. Other critters vying for attention were the huge Navanax, and equally huge Black Sea Hares. The Cardinalfish den lacks their namesake, but the few big Blacksmiths were sleeping.
Highlight of the dive was the Horn Shark on the VP slope – I was lucky to catch it just as it tried to eat a dead Swimming Crab, but couldn’t quite manage the too wide crustacean, which was promptly spit out. The shark didn’t even mind the Tuna Crabs crawling on its head and pectorals. So great. The irritating dust cloud was caused by a hunting Sea Lion. A great dive.

Check out a cool video from Jackie of an encounter with a big horn shark at the V point.
