A Wonderful Dive at the Shores

The swell dipped further down tonight. Headed out with Jackie and normal crowd to the shores. The waves were fast but had no power. We dropped at the shallow. The visibility improved a lot. The sand dollar field grew into a much large size and there were patches pack with baby san dolloars. For a while, I thought I was at the main wall until the engine block showed up. Obviously the current brought us all the way to north of the V point. Spent quite some time with a tiny skeleton shrimp.

Here and there kelp started to show up and some of them grew pretty tall. Saw the same kelp packed with lion’s nudi as Bob saw. It’s been while and finally they showed up again.

The highlight was an Aeolidia papillosa – a kind of nudibranch so elusive to me.

I could hear my heart pounding when it showed up. From the V point I turned back to the shore. Somehow the shallow felt much colder than the canyon.

Here is Jackie’s report.

La Jolla Shores
Time: night
Temp: 54 degrees – felt colder
Viz: YES – it is back – fairly clear
The usual group showed up at V Street and headed out for various parts of Neptune’s domain.
I headed out with Weiwei through 1’ – 3’ surf no power for the usual tour. We did the tour backwards though as the sneaky current was enacted, and dropped us way north, past VP.
I was so happy to see clear waters that it didn’t occur to me I didn’t know where I was, until the wall started to taper off…
So we visited the Engine Block which was a nice change. It is crammed with colorful invert life.
Highlight critter – Lion Nudis are back, as Bob A mentioned yesterday. Heading south, we came across the barely alive kelp, home to some Lions feeding. There was also a very small fun Scallop sitting on a kelp frond, taking in the passing krill etc…
Cowries were out, more and more Brittle Starfish, large Octos in their dens, and the usual suspects sleeping and tucked in for the night.
The shallows was colder than the canyon. Weiwei pointed out the teeny tiny Sanddollars, you have to squint, scattered all over. The beds will be growing. A great dive.
