An Alien Shore

Despite my complaining about the invasion of tuna crabs at La Jolla Shores, I am still drawn to this critter and amazed how they have transformed the landscape of the canyon. When carpeted by thousands of them, the shores looked alien.

My dives with the tuna crab have been mostly at night. At night, they are attracted by my light and easily agitated. If I don’t keep on moving, they would engulf me within seconds. I have to admit it is a thrilling experience, especially if you haven’t tried it yet. But after a while it becomes too overwhelming. So I decide to go during the day.

In bright daylight, they are totally different. Instead of jumping all over me, they are hopping back away from me. To avoid chaos, I have to be careful not to get them stirred. By swimming slow, I actually get chances to see them better.

I have been filming them in the past three days. As the dive condition deteriorated more each day, the water became darker and murkier. When the strong surge picked up today, I could only find them tucked deep down the canyon. In other time, the area was mostly a featureless sandy slope, but with all the tuna crabs it was packed with life. Like it or not, these critters have brought something new to the shores and likely it will last for a little while.
