Another Night Dive at the Shores

Diving at shores tonight was rough. The surf became high when I walked out around the sunset. There were lots of movements in the water and I had a hard time to kick out. Then I decided to drop down sooner. At the bottom came immediately a strong current pushing me to the south and the surge was in full force. With some efforts of compensating the current, I got to the canyon wall. The surge remained strong but the visibility was tolerable (5-10 ft with lots floating debris). The temperature at the canyon was 49F throughout the dive. I was a bit south of the main wall with a thick patch of tuna crabs – they photo-bombed everything. There were a few interesting critters. The highlight was a mud shrimp (thanks Jovan).

Here is some info I found online:

Mud shrimps (family Upogebiidae) appear like small mud lobsters, except that the tail is often broadly fan-shaped. They burrow into the substrates in intertidal areas, and some species even bore into corals. They generally do not build mounds like the ones built by mud lobsters though. They are sometimes confused with the coral ghost shrimps of the infraorder Axiidea, but can be distinguished from the latter by having pincers on the first pair of legs, and very reduced or no pincers on the second pair, instead of having well developed pincers on the first two pairs of legs.

I was not able to get to the V point before I had to leave. The surge picked up even more on my way back and the current was so strange that it made swimming to ALL directions difficult. My compensation to the current was a bit too much and I ended up way north of the V point, where the surf got even higher and faster. I was just happy to get out and get home.
