Another Night Dive at the Shores

The condition at the shores has been very strange recently. Although the surf is small, the water has a constant swirl. The shallow has been murky with very poor visibility. At depth, the viz opens up but it is still quite surgy with lots of particulates. Despite such conditions I still wanted to give it a try. I followed by routine and kicked out to the crap patch. From there I swam to the Vallecitos Point.

The first interesting sighting was a yellow crab. I have been seeing them quite a lot recently.

This one was hanging out around the grassy patch and its bright shell contrasted with the dark background.

The algae that occupied the crap patch a few weeks ago has now all gone. Under the grass, I saw this sarcastic fringehead with unique red color – very cute.

The water was very surgy but the baby sea hare didn’t seem to care that much.

On the patch there was a few short kelp growing out of the grass. At night, it became shelter for some juvenile kelpfish.

In fact, there were a few fish hanging around this single kelp. But they were all trying to hide behind the kelp fonds. In addition, it was surgy and the kelp swung back and forth so much. So putting them all into one picture was very difficult. I tried but didn’t succeed.

After a short cruise, I got to the canyon wall. The big swell has made the place look messy. At night, this big scorpion fish was tucked between the tubes.

Along the canyon wall were all the ordinary creatures. One interesting sighting here was a small gathering of sculpins.

But once I got to the Vallecitos Point, I saw this baby horn shark at the slope. It looked very tranquil under the moonlight.

Above the point, on the kelp I saw this spotted triopha.

I circled around the point but didn’t see anything uncommon. This big scorpion fish was tucked on the wall. It was a big one.

For some reason, the V point was especially cold. My fingers were numb. From there I headed to the shore. While I was climbing up the sandy slope, the viz dropped down to basically just about 5 ft. But the good side was that the water was warm. A fun dive!
