Coral Reefs at Anilao

It is such a big misconception that Anilao is all about muck diving and macrophotography. It completely proved me wrong today. Without a second thought, I brought my macro lens and hopped onto the boat. We did in total three dives at Kirby’s Rock, Coral Garden of Sombrero Island, and Koala. They are all beautiful tropical coral reefs. The coral was so beautiful that at the beginning I was regretful that I didn’t bring a wide-angle lens. But I soon realized that Anilao offers everything – from big to small. Instead of dwelling in the regret, I started to look for opportunities for the macro lens.

There are so many stuff to see. Among all the critters, I liked clownfish. Carlo was laughing at me because clownfish came so ordinary. But to me, they are the symbols of the tropical coral reef. Above all, they are ridiculously cute. A pair or a group would never stop swimming in and out of the coral. No matter which angle I turn, they always look at me. Absolutely adorable.

One cool encounter is a leaf fish sitting right on top of a coral. Everyone was excited to see it.

A pink soft coral candy crab is also all-time favorite in Anilao.

Everywhere I stop, there are some cool critters to look for.

Carlo also found a pair of Orangutan crab. When I took pictures of the pair, I didn’t even know what I was looking at. It also turns out a cool sighting.

There was just so much to see.

Although I was with my macro lens, I still tried to get a few shots of the reef. These are not great shots, but they carry my memory of the beautiful sites we went.

At the end of the second dive, we came across a juvenile sweet lip. Sweet lip is a kind of grouper. The juvenile has very distinct pattern. I though it was a cool fish.

Of course there will nudibranchs. Here is the encounter of a tryon’s hypselodoris (Hypselodoris tryoni).

And here is a Chromodoris willani, which is considered a common species in the area.

Another nudibranch I came across is Phyllidia pustulosa, also a very common nudibranch in Anilao.

This is the day 1 of my diving in Anilao. What a cool place to be!
