Crescent Bay Diving

I was chatting with Janet and the conversation reminded me about Crescent Bay. In the past two years, we have been experiencing some harsh dive conditions. Crescent Bay is sensitive to swell and the diving condition has not been good. I have almost forgotten. I quickly checked the surf report and the condition seemed divable.

Headed out around 5 am and excited about the diving. The traffic was minimum and it took me about 1 hour to get to Cliff Drive. I checked the south trail to the beach. The sand retreated a lot and there was a huge gap between the paved the trail to the sand, making it almost impossible to get onto the beach with gear. I switched to the north trail with the stairs. There were a few divers who already parked. But I was not to far from the entrance.

I decided to dive the south reef first. The entry and the kick out were easy. When I dropped down, I immediately noticed the strong surge. The visibility was about 10-15 ft with lots of particulates. But it was nice to see some kelp and a few big sea stars. There was an explosion of the Spanish Shawls, but the surge was too strong to take nice photos. After I kicked out further, the surge became less. The highlight was Hopkins Roses, one inside the cave and the other outside.

It was nice to have the chance of taking some nice close-ups.

In the second dive, I headed to the north to check out Deadman’s reef. It was exciting to see that the area had a lot of kelp. But meanwhile, it was sad to see so much Sargassum and algae growth in the area. I was luck to find a small Trapania velox.

Throughout the area, there were a lot of Christmas worms with different colors. I have never spent much time on this creature, but in this dive, I tried to capture some of them. It was cool.

I wish the condition would be better. But it was nice to get out and dive some different areas.
