Crescent Bay Diving Adventure

Laguna beach is a short 1-hr drive from San Diego and it offers a variety of dive sites with their unique scenery. Crescent bay is one of them. The beach is relatively small with two beautiful peninsulas extending far out to the ocean. Even without diving, this is a beautiful place to spend time. Both sides of the bay have sophisticated rocky structures with abundant of life.

To transport the gears, there is a hill to climb, which is the strenuous part of the experience. I geared up on the street at the top and walked directly down hill to the beach. The bay was quiet in the early morning hours.

I spent the first dive on the south peninsula. The water was relatively shallow – most of the time I was in 25 ft depth. The rocks from large fingers and it was fun to check out the many crevices. The garibaldi and the shiphead were attracted by the stir-ups so they always followed me. Sometime they were curious and would like to come up to my camera lens. They were probably checking out their reflections on the lens.

There was a lot of kelp and at various places the patches were large. With the bright sunshine penetrating the surface, they looked very beautiful.

Under a few crevices I found some large groups of lobsters. This reminded me the diving at the north wall of the La Jolla Shores, where we also found holes packed with lobsters. But La Jolla Canyon was muddy and the visibility in the hole was always bad, impossible to take pictures. Here in Crescent bay the rocky structure made a difference. It was very cool to see some many of them packed.

The visibility was very good in both dives. Under the boulders, this little kelp fish blended well with the background and made beautiful pictures.

Along the boulders, I found quite a few Tylodina fungina. Compared those I saw at San Diego, they were much bigger here. To my surprise, they could extend their sponge-like body to quite a length. This was the first time I got to observe them so up close.

At the end of my second dive, I came across this cabazan on top of a boulder. Surprisingly, he was very cool with my presence and allowed me to take many pictures. I had lots of fun with this little guy.

Time spent at Crescent Bay was always pleasant. In the early afternoon, the beach became crowded. It’s the holiday season so everywhere looked very festival. The street had a lot of fancy shops and restaurants. Time allows I strongly suggest to spend sometime and check them out.
