D. spaldingi Dive at the Secret Garden

From recent dive reports I learned that there were a large gathering of Doriopsilla spaldingi at the secret garden so I decided to check it out. I haven’t been to the site for a long time. When I got to the shores, there was heavy frog – the pier completely dissipated and the visibility toward the shores was no more than 100 yards. Technically the condition was bad.

I almost gave up the idea of going to the secret garden and decided to try the main wall. While I was kicking out, the surface was so flat that I just had to give it a try. I used the red buoy on the north as a reference and made a rough estimation. After I dropped down, I landed right at the slope.

From the slope, I headed out and south. I found great visibility and calm water. In a few minutes, here I was – right on the secret garden. There was indeed a nudi explosion – everywhere I saw nudibranchs with bright yellow color. I headed down to 100-110 ft water and immediately found the gathering. I have never seen so many of them together in such a small area.

With my macro lens, I had to back out pretty far to get some shots. But the results were cool.

These are very good looking nudibranchs. They form small clusters of two or three.

When I moved up along the slope, I saw another single Doriopsilla spaldingi with great position for pictures. Had a few shots before I had come up.

From the secret garden, I followed the slope to get to the wall north of V point. Then I cruised to the engine block and from there I turned north and headed back to the shallow. What a great dive!

Here is my original report.

2016.9.18 early morning ~ 7 am. Did one dive at the shores this morning. My plan was to go to the secret garden but hesitated because of the heavy fog. I then entered from the V street with the intention of going to the V point. But the surface condition was superb. So I changed course to SC. Both the shore line and the pier disappeared in the fog. I used the red buoy for the line up. It turned out to be a great marker. Landed right next to the garden. The viz was fantastic (> 30 ft) with no surge – beautiful and tranquil. The SC was absolutely gorgeous with fish and nudibranchs everywhere. Spent the all the time at D. spaldingi spot. It’s a heaven. Climbed up toward the south and turned to the shore from the engine block. Great conditions!
