2023.10.18. | Sequoia and Kings National Park – Monterey – San Simeon – Morro Bay
I recently embarked on a car-camping journey to Sequoia National Park, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Before reaching the park’s towering giants, my adventure took me through a remarkable sequence of natural wonders.
My trip began with a visit to the captivating elephant seals of San Simeon, where I enjoyed watching these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. At Morro Rock, I was fortunate enough to witness a small group of playful sea otters, especially a mother taking care of a baby, adding to the enchantment of my journey.
Anticipating a dive in the pristine waters of Monterey, I had packed my scuba gear and two tanks, eager to explore the depths of the ocean. However, upon my arrival in Monterey, I was met with a peak in swell conditions, rendering diving an impractical option. Undeterred, I decided to postpone my underwater adventure and make my way to Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park.
The allure of witnessing the grandeur of giant sequoias had always beckoned to me, and I was excited to explore this natural wonder. Car camping offered me the unique advantage of hitting the park’s trails before the crowds arrived, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the beauty of the surroundings. Freed from the concern of finding accommodation, I dedicated my time to capturing the park’s magnificence through my camera lens. Two days passed in the blink of an eye as I reveled in the serene wilderness of National Park.
Upon returning to Monterey, the swell had subsided, and the sea at the breakwater was calm and inviting. Although the underwater visibility wasn’t as crystal clear as I had hoped, the marine life I encountered was nothing short of breathtaking. Unexpectedly, a group of playful sealions graced the end of the breakwall, turning my dive into a magical and unforgettable experience.
In the end, my journey from the towering giants of Sequoia National Park to the enchanting kelp forests of Monterey was a testament to the beauty and unpredictability of nature. Each stop on my adventure presented its own unique wonders, leaving me with cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
