Fun with Juvenile Rockfish

Tonight’s dive was so special. For weeks, schools of juvenile rockfish have brought so much joy to the canyon. I have filmed them everywhere, the Boundary Wall, Main Wall, North Wall, Secret Garden, and Scripps Canyon. However, they were always shy and stayed away from my light. They have been always the background. But tonight, they let me to get really close.

I kicked out to the canyon around the sunset and dropped down right at the canyon ledge. From there I descended to the bottom of the wall. The water was clear and calm. The canyon felt tranquil. While I got ready to head north, I noticed in front of a school of juvenile rock fish. They were low on the bottom but bounced away once I shone my light on them. I swam slowly and quietly. As the ambient light was getting darker and darker, the fish got closer and closer to me. Instead of bouncing away from the cone of light, they started gathering under the light, as if attracted by some magic fun. I started to pan my camera with the light and amazingly the fish followed wherever I went. I felt like they offered me their trust and allowed me, for a moment, to be with them.

I aborted my plan of cruising the wall; instead, I stayed in the same spot for the whole dive. The fish never left, but I had to go. The moment of connection with nature feels magic.
