Once in a while at the shores, I come across fried egg jellyfish. The long thin tentacles are often the first signs of their presence. Following the tentacles comes a big mass. On the top is the bell, in perfect oval shape, translucent. Inside the bell is a yellowish core, just like an egg yolk, hence the name of the jellyfish. The majesty of the jellyfish comes from its motion when swimming. The fringe of the bell waves up and down, the body contracts and relaxes, the massive probes under the bell, like the bottom of a waltz dress, fold and unfold, and the long tentacles flow behind gracefully.
This time, instead of suspended and swimming in the water column, a fried egg jellyfish appeared lying on the ocean ground, upside down, with the bell bent backward, motionless. I watched from distance, thinking that it might be dead. I swam toward it to get a closer look. Surprisingly, it sensed my approach and started to move. As if my light disrupted its sleep, now the jellyfish became awake. Its bell bent back gently and the body turned upside. It started swimming toward the surface and faded slowly into the pitch black.
I awe the beauty of jellyfish but rarely think about their minds. Now I realize that just like every other creatures, they think, respond to the environment, and make judgment. I don’t know why it lay on the ocean floor or how it sensed my presence, but I know clearly that for a moment our minds connected.
