La Jolla Shores at Night – ‘Hunting’ the SS Grouper

Somehow today the idea of seeing recent SS grouper at the shores got into my mind. I am not a ‘fish person’ but got inspired by Jackie ‘s video. I grabbed another tank after Point Loma and headed to the shores.

There was still a bit light when I kicked out. Easy smooth entry and the water was clear. Pretty good diving condition.

At the sandy flat, I came across a goat fish so that was cool.

At site, for the first 30 min I didn’t see any sign of a dark pearled fish and left to the V point. Before I completely gave up, I wanted to give it another try so I turned back. Waited for a while and saw two rock fish switching their little dens. I noticed one fish is a bit wider than the other and darn…that was the SS grouper.

But it was deep in the den. I had to turn off the light and sat on the canyon watching all the luminescent creatures swimming. Once in a while I turned on the light, the fish kept staying at the same place. For about anther half-hour it decided to switch den. Instead of swimming out and putting on a dancing, it attached itself to the wall and darted fast. I got two pictures and a few seconds video. Before I moved my eyes from the LCD screen, it disappeared and never showed up again.

So I think learned that juvenile SS group might be just diurnal and super shy at night. During the day the chance of seeing it might be higher.

Other highlight of the dive is a big octopus capturing a crab, and a large diamond ray gliding the canyon while I was trying to make friend with the SS grouper. There were lots of cardinalfish.

A great dive!
