La Jolla Shores Diving

Since the last dive, I have been resting hard because of a bad cold. The dive condition was pretty rough in the past a few days anyway. But finally, I recovered from the cold and the surf looked good today. I went in the morning with Mike to the shores. There were some waves but completely negligible. The sun was out and it was warm.

We headed out to the north wall. It had been a while since last time we visited that wall. Thanks for Mike’s precise navigation, we dropped off right on the wall. The visibility was not optimum but along the canyon it was not too bad. Other than a few rock fish, I didn’t really many interesting creatures. The crevices of the wall were full of lobsters. Lobsters often give pretty dull pictures but a lot of them gathered were quite fun to watch.

One of the crevices was occupied a few dozens of lobsters and it looked really amazing. However, the big group made the water super cloudy, basically impossible for any pictures. Here is a short video of them on the north wall. Not a lot of them but you can get an idea.

The north wall was deepish so we waited for a good surface interval. Then we headed out the south. At the beginning of our dive, the visibility was pretty bad and there came a pretty strong current, pushing us toward the wall. After about 20 minutes, the visibility opened up a bit. But again, we didn’t see many stuff on the canyon wall. So we turned and decided to cruise the shallows for nudibranchs. Here are a few nudies we saw.

One interesting sighting was about this Flabellina pricei. They hided in the grasses so taking pictures, particularly with a pretty strong surge, was pretty difficult. But some of the pictures turned out are pretty good. You can see the fine structures and the colors of their spikes – quite amazing.

Since the winter season, the sightings of nudibranch have become rare. So I am quite happy that we spotted quite some nudies today. However, we haven’t been lucky to find the Dirona Picta – but I am sure it’s just a matter of time.
