While the most of the country is dealing with winter storm, I feel lucky that the dive continuous in Southern California. The temperature here has also dropped significantly – but really, who can complain. After the heavy rain and high surf over the weekend, the sea finally calms down. I went out to the shores and headed to the north.
The sky is beautiful with all the shining stars. Amazingly, the water temperature still holds at high 50s. The visibility is also amazingly good with basically no surge. So here are some highlights of the dive.
First, the most exciting event is the sighting of Dirona Pica nudibranch. Since I learned its presence at the shores, I have been trying to find one in the past a few weeks. Finally, on my way swimming back, there it is – right in front of my eyes. The little guy hides himself under the grass, which makes the picture taking quite challenging. But I still managed to get a few shots with okay details. It seems like they have tiny ‘feet’ around the body and the whole nudi looks like made from brown sugar.
I wish I could stay longer but it is the end of my dive and my air is running low. But to be sure, I also shoot a video of the little guy. (Warning: unless you are a big fan of Dirona Pica you will find the video is painfully slow.)

I also had some fun with this octopus. He is in a good size and quite angry at my light. As you can see, he poses all gestures and trying to scare me away. Well, at the end it’s his win.
The fringehead at the V-point is also very interesting. Given their ever presence, I have pretty ignored them and stopped taking pictures. But today this guy caught my attention.
He is so excited to see the krill attracted by my light and attempts to catch some. Here is shore video of the fringehead catching the krill.
Another interesting sighting is the little yellow-green crab. I think the color is very unique. He looks very clumsy crawling along the canyon.
Other than all of these, I also see all the other creatures that are commonly at the canyon.
When I get back to the shores, wow – it is cold, freezing cold. I have to put my hood on while walking to my car. But I am so happy to be able to dive in the middle of December. It is a short dive and what I see is way beyond my expectation. So long till the next dive.
